    For the December 15, 2015 DC ANS dinner meeting, Dr. Ruth Weiner, Expert in Transportation Risk Analysis at Boston Government Services, will be speaking on the following topic:

    “Risks of Transporting Radioactive Materials”

    – A review on how risks of transporting radioactive materials are estimated, risk models used, routine transportation and transportation accidents, U.S. and IAEA approaches.

    Ruth Weiner was born in Vienna, Austria.? In 1938, she emigrated with her parents to the U.S. to escape the Nazi occupation of Austria.? She is attended Baltimore, MD public schools, received a B. S (1956) and M.S. (1957) in physics from the University of Illinois and a Ph.D in Chemistry in 1962 from the Johns Hopkins University.? She was an AEC Postdoctoral Fellow at Johns Hopkins and a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Colorado Medical School, and subsequently Assistant Professor of Chemistry at Colorado Women?s College.? In 1971 Dr. Weiner was appointed Chairman of the Chemistry Department and Associate Professor of Chemistry at Florida International University (Miami FL).? In 1974 she was appointed Dean of the Huxley College of Environmental Studies and Professor of Environmental Studies at Western Washington University in Bellingham, WA.? In 1995, after a brief tenure at the Environmental Evaluation Group of New Mexico, Dr. Weiner moved to Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, NM, from which she retired in 2014.? Since 2014 she has been the Program Manager for the risk assessment program RADTRAN, which she has managed since 2003, first at Sandia and currently for Boston Government Services, under contract to DOE/EM.? She is also Adjunct Professor of Nuclear Engineering at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI.

    Dr. Weiner has been recognized for both her scientific and environmental work.? Since 1972 she has been listed in American Men and Women of Science. From 1970 until 1974 she served on the EPA National Air Pollution Control Techniques Advisory Committee.? From 1975 until 1984 she served on the Oceanographic Commission of Washington State. ?She was the AAAS Congressional Science Fellow for 1984.? From 2003 until 2008, she served on the NRC Advisory Committee on Nuclear Waste and Materials.? In 2004 she was elected a Fellow of the American Nuclear Society.? Dr. Weiner has been a co-author several editions of Environmental Engineering (Elsevier, pub), most recently Weiner and Mathews, Environmental Engineering Fourth Edition, 2003.? She was also a preparer of NUREG 2125 ?Spent fuel Transportation Risk Assessment? (2014).? In addition to half a dozen books, she has written or co-authored about 150 papers and several book chapters.

    For the October 6, 2015 DC ANS dinner meeting, Mr. William R. Gross, Senior Project Manager of Engineering at the Nuclear Energy Institute, will be speaking on the following topic:

    “Cyber Security – What Does it Mean for Nuclear?”

    Cyber Security ? What does it mean for nuclear??Cyber security is a topic of great national importance, one that has a?nexus to national security. ?Cyber threats include individuals who would?seek to steal credit card information, to steal highly valuable?intellectual property, or to make a political statement. ?But cyber attacks?can also be used as a tool to cause great harm ? including attempts to?disrupt critical infrastructure such as the electrical grid, or to sabotage?nuclear facilities. ?Bill will provide context to the discussion,?overviewing the cyber threat landscape and the potential risks and?consequences at nuclear facilities. ?The basis, role and scope of the NRC?s?existing and proposed cyber security requirements will be discussed. ?Bill?will also describe, at a high level, the Cybersecurity Framework ? a tool?organizations can use to assess and enhance their cyber security. ?Finally,?Bill will ?discuss his perspectives on the key challenges and opportunities?that may help remedy some of the significant cyber security challenges we?face today.

    The Nuclear Energy Institute (?NEI?) is the organization responsible for establishing unified industry policy on matters affecting the nuclear energy industry, including the regulatory aspects of generic operational and technical issues. NEI?s members include all entities licensed to operate commercial nuclear power plants in the United States.

    Bill Gross manages cyber security projects for the Nuclear Energy Institute.? In his current role he engages industry and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) on the implementation of cyber security requirements.? Bill also engages with other agencies, including the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) regarding cyber security.

    Bill graduated from the University of Maryland, College Park with a degree in Computer Science in 1999.? He obtained a Computer Science Master?s Degree with a focus on information assurance from the James Madison University in 2005.? Bill began supporting power reactor cyber security efforts in 2008 as a subject matter expert, and assumed the role of project manager for cyber security issues in 2010.? Bill coordinates the NEI Cyber Security Task Force, the annual NEI Cyber Security Implementation Workshop, and acts as a co-chair on the DHS Nuclear Sector Cyber Security Subcouncil.? Bill?s 15 years in information technology covered various roles, including: software engineering; software development; software quality assurance and testing; software and hardware configuration management; and host, network, and web application security.

    For the September?9, 2015 DC ANS dinner meeting, Ms. Carol L. Berrigan, Senior Director of Supplier Policy and Programs, will be speaking on the following topic:

    “Current Issues in International Nuclear Trade”

    Worldwide, 67 new nuclear energy facilities are under construction, and more than 160 are in the licensing and advanced planning stages. The demand for high-quality commodities, components and services provides an export opportunity for U.S. manufacturers. Appropriate Federal policies can play an important role in enabling successful U.S. nuclear exports.

    Carol L. Berrigan is Senior Director for Supplier Policy and Programs at the Nuclear Energy Institute. In this role, she is responsible for the organization?s nuclear manufacturing infrastructure, international trade, nuclear technology exports, and supplier?related activities. ?Ms. Berrigan, who re?joined NEI in 2003, also manages the U.S. Women in Nuclear program. ?Ms. Berrigan was with USCEA, an NEI predecessor organization, from 1992-1994.

    From 1998 to 2003, Ms. Berrigan was Director of Marketing for Pulseworks, where she was responsible for managing marketing and business development functions.? Ms. Berrigan was a Program Manager for Camber Corporation, a specialized engineering and management consulting firm in Washington, DC from 1994-1998.? She supported several U.S. government programs related to climate change, renewable energy, energy efficiency and trade issues.

    Ms. Berrigan received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Chicago. She is a member of the boards of directors of the American Nuclear Society and WiN Global.
