    Craig serves as the Washington Representative for the American Nuclear Society, where he helps devise and execute ANS federal outreach activities to Capitol Hill and the Executive Branch on behalf of the 11,000 men and women of the American nuclear community.? Since assuming his role in 2005, Craig has played a central role in several high-profile nuclear issues, including the creation of the Nuclear Energy University Program (NEUP) and Integrated University Program (IUP), and defeating legislation that would have banned the commercial use of 14 radioisotopes.

    Prior to entering private practice, Craig worked on Capitol Hill for 8 years, serving as Chief of Staff for Congressman Joe Knollenberg (R-MI) and Associate Staff of the House Appropriations Committee.? During his time on Capitol Hill, Craig worked on important nuclear issues, including the preservation of federal nuclear R&D funding and the accelerated cleanup of DOE nuclear sites.? Craig also served as Assistant Vice President of Federal Affairs for Wayne State University where he coordinated several successful, high-profile political efforts to secure funding for WSU?s R&D activities.

    Craig also serves on the U.S. Department of Commerce Civil Nuclear Trade Advisory Committee (CINTAC) and sits on the Board of Directors of the Public Affairs Council.? In 2011, he received an ANS Presidential Citation for his role in ANS post-Fukushima response communications and public engagement efforts.

    Craig has a bachelor?s degree in Government and Politics from the University of Maryland, College Park and is a graduate of the Public Affairs Institute.? He lives in Bethesda, MD with his wife Clare and their two children and is an avid skier, canoeist, and Formula One fan.

    Currently there are dozens of Light Water Reactors (LWRs) under construction around the world.? Most experts expect LWR technology to be the primary source of nuclear power well into the latter half of this century.? At the same time there continues to be strong interest in moving to more advanced LWR technology (such as Small Modular Reactors) and Generation IV systems.? The presentation will provide perspectives on the future of nuclear power in the United States and how the integration of LWR technology and Gen IV technology can lead to sustainable nuclear power.? The presentation will also provide an overview of recent initiatives of the American Nuclear Society.

    Steven Mirsky has been with NuScale for over 9 years.? He is responsible for managing U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) review responses and interactions for some of the chapters and parts of the NuScale Design Certification Application (DCA), Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI) interface, and oversight of all NuScale Rockville office activities. ?NuScale is the only SMR under review by the NRC.

    Mirsky has more than 42 years of experience in the nuclear industry.? He has worked for Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) and NUS Corporation consulting for U.S. and foreign nuclear power plants, DOE, and the NRC and at Baltimore Gas and Electric Company (now Exelon) and Virginia Power and Electric Company (now Dominion) supporting the design, operation, licensing, and analysis of the Surry, North Anna, and Calvert Cliffs nuclear power plants.

    Mirsky holds an M.S. in Nuclear Engineering from Pennsylvania State University, a Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering from Cooper Union, and is a licensed Professional Engineer in Mechanical Engineer in the State of Maryland.

    Using computation methods within the SCALE code package developed by Oak Ridge National Laboratory and a simplified model of a pebble bed reactor, pebble properties and motion are evaluated for their effects on fuel utilization

    Captain Benevides retired on 30 Sep 2014 after thirty one years of service to our Armed Forces. Dr. Benevides went to work at US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (US NRC), Office of Regulatory Research. Dr. Benevides is currently a Scientist at Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Division in the Radiation Technology Group. He also is holds an Adjunct Assistant Professor position at Georgetown University in the Health Physics Program. Captain Benevides’ personal military awards included Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (three-gold stars), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (gold star), and Army Achievement Medal.

    Brianna Kaufmann is a Nuclear Engineering major with a Russian minor from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She was selected as a Bowman Scholar and early-selected Submarines in the spring of her 2/C year. Ms. Kaufmann also received the inaugural Behrens? Family Scholarship.
